Insulin often referred to as 'insulin' is a peptide hormone with a mass of approximately 5.8 kDa generated by the beta cells in the pancreas. Its precursor proinsulin is synthesized as a larger molecule with a mass of about 9 kDa. Both insulin and proinsulin are primarily expressed in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. Proinsulin undergoes enzymatic cleavage to form mature insulin and C-peptide. Insulin plays an essential role in glucose metabolism by regulating cellular uptake of glucose.
Biological function summary
Insulin and proinsulin are indispensable for maintaining glucose homeostasis in the body. Insulin binds to its receptor a receptor tyrosine kinase on target cells like muscle and adipose tissue to facilitate glucose uptake. Proinsulin also has a lesser-known role in insulin regulation and folding.
