A1CF also known as APOBEC1 complementation factor is an auxiliary protein that assists in RNA editing. It works with the APOBEC1 enzyme to deaminate cytidines in RNA transcripts converting cytidine to uridine. A1CF has a molecular weight of around 65 kDa. The protein expresses mainly in the liver and small intestine but you can find it in lower levels in other tissues.
Biological function summary
A1CF supports the RNA editing process affecting mRNA transcripts including those involved in lipid metabolism. It contributes to the editing of apolipoprotein B (ApoB) mRNA which results in two different forms of ApoB protein. Although A1CF does not form part of a large stable complex it interacts specifically with APOBEC1 to exert its functions in the cell.
Pathways
A1CF plays a significant role in lipid metabolism especially in the regulation of cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The connection between A1CF and the ApoB mRNA editing pathway illustrates its importance in lipid transport and energy homeostasis. This pathway involves interactions with other proteins such as APOBEC1 and components of the lipid transport system emphasizing A1CF’s function in modulating lipid profiles.
A1CF's role in lipid metabolism implicates it in metabolic conditions such as hyperlipidemia and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Abnormalities in A1CF function can lead to improper ApoB mRNA editing which influences lipid levels and contributes to these diseases. Additionally A1CF connections with APOBEC1 and the lipid regulation pathway highlight its potential impact in modulating disease outcomes through RNA editing errors.
