MMCP-4 known as mouse mast cell protease 4 is a chymase encoded by the Mcpt4 gene. This serine protease has an approximate molecular mass of 30 kDa. mMCP-4 expresses mainly in connective tissue-type mast cells where it plays an important mechanical role. It selectively cleaves peptide bonds aiding in the breakdown of proteins and peptides contributing to various cellular processes. The protease operates in specific tissues such as the skin intestines and respiratory tracts where mast cells abundantly exist.
Biological function summary
Mouse mast cell protease 4 contributes to immune response regulation. It forms part of a complex mast cell granule where it collaborates with other enzymes to facilitate inflammation and immune defense mechanisms. Through proteolytic activity mMCP-4 regulates inflammatory mediators and impacts processes like vascular permeability and tissue remodeling. Its enzymatic function enables it to degrade extracellular matrix components and activate other cells in the immune system.
Pathways
MMCP-4 participates in the immune and inflammatory pathways. It directly interacts with components of the immune system by affecting cytokine release and modulating other mast cell products. mMCP-4 operates alongside proteins like tryptase and chymase family proteins contributing to processes such as histamine release and cytokine metabolism. These interactions allow efficient coordination within immune pathways leading to effective cellular responses against pathogens.
Its role in mast cell-driven inflammation connects mMCP-4 to conditions like asthma and atopic dermatitis. Its protease function influences the pathology of these inflammatory disorders by regulating mediators that exacerbate symptoms. Through these disease pathways mMCP-4 interacts with proteins such as matrix metalloproteinases and other related chymases affecting disease progression and severity. Understanding mMCP-4 is important for developing therapeutic approaches targeting mast cell-mediated inflammation.
