Taurine often referred to as 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid is a small organic compound with a molecular mass of approximately 125 Da. It is not a classic amino acid used in protein synthesis but it plays many roles in various biological systems. Taurine is highly expressed in many tissues including the brain retina heart and skeletal muscle. It acts as an osmolyte helping to stabilize cell membranes and maintain the ionic balance inside cells. Additionally taurine contributes to bile salt formation in the liver.
Biological function summary
Taurine serves various functions that support survival and health. It acts as an antioxidant reducing oxidative stress by neutralizing reactive oxygen species. Taurine also participates in calcium signaling which is essential for muscle contraction and neurotransmitter release. While it is not part of a larger protein complex it interacts closely with membrane receptors and ion channels modulating their activity and contributing to cellular homeostasis.
Pathways
Taurine is integral to pathways such as bile acid biosynthesis and calcium signaling. In bile acid synthesis taurine conjugates with bile acids increasing their solubility and functionality in fat digestion and cholesterol metabolism. In the calcium signaling pathway taurine interacts with proteins like the ryanodine receptor and the sodium-calcium exchanger regulating calcium homeostasis in excitable tissues.
Taurine's deficiency or imbalance relates to conditions like retinitis pigmentosa and heart failure. In retinitis pigmentosa taurine contributes to the survival of photoreceptor cells alongside proteins like rhodopsin and a lack of taurine accelerates degeneration. In heart failure taurine impacts cardiac contractility and stress response interacting with proteins such as the sodium-calcium exchanger to maintain calcium equilibrium which is important for heart function.
