ABI5 (ABSCISIC ACID-INSENSITIVE 5) is a basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factor that plays a significant mechanical role in plant stress responses specifically related to abscisic acid (ABA) signaling. The molecular weight of ABI5 is approximately 40 kDa and it is predominantly expressed in plant tissues such as seeds roots and leaves. ABI5 acts by binding to ABA-responsive elements (ABRE) in the promoter region of target genes regulating their transcription.
Biological function summary
ABI5 influences the ABA-mediated stress response and seed germination processes. This transcription factor forms part of a larger regulatory complex that modulates gene expression in response to ABA. In seeds ABI5 helps delay germination under unfavorable environmental conditions by controlling the expression of both stress-responsive and dormancy-related genes. In leaves it plays a part in the regulation of stomatal closure an adaptation to reduce water loss under drought stress.
Pathways
ABI5 is intimately involved in the ABA signaling pathway important for plant stress responses. It works alongside other bZIP transcription factors such as ABI3 and ABI4 to regulate the expression of ABA-responsive genes. The ABI5-mediated pathway intersects with the ethylene signaling pathway where it interacts with proteins such as EIN2 that mediate cross-communication between ABA and ethylene responses during seed germination and plant development.
ABI5 plays a role in plant responses to abiotic stress conditions such as drought and high salinity. These stress conditions adversely affect plant growth and crop yield. ABI5's interaction with the protein DREB2A another transcription factor involved in abiotic stress responses is important for modulating gene networks that confer tolerance to these stresses. Enhancing the expression or activity of ABI5 in crops could help improve stress tolerance and sustainability in agriculture.
