NAT2 and its isozyme, arylamine N-acetyltransferase 1 (NAT1), play key roles in the detoxification of carcinogenic arylamines and xenobiotics by catalyzing acetyl-coenzyme A (CoA)-dependent biotransformation of arylamines to N-arylacetamides.
