It is a 23 kDa haem-binding protein that was first identified as the PP23 protein isolated from human full-term placentas. hEBP2 is essential for the proliferation of human cells and the repression of hEBP2 severely decreases the ability of EBNA1 and EBV-based plasmids to bind mitotic chromosomes (PMID: 15923612).
