The DDR involves extensive dynamics of protein post-translational modifications, most notably phosphorylation and ubiquitylation. A recently identified novel component of the DDR pathway - histone H2B monoubiquitylation - exemplifies this principle. Monoubiquitination of histone H2B is a dynamic post-translational histone modification associated with transcriptional elongation and the DNA damage response [PMID:22021426].
