The protein is part of an anciently diverged family of RNA-binding proteins and shares significant homology with RBMX, another RNA-binding protein that is important for controlling splicing, transcription, and genome stability (PMID: 39356106). The expression of RBMXL2 is restricted to the testis, and it is highly expressed during the pachytene and diplotene stages of meiosis, which are characterized by high levels of transcription and alternative splicing (PMID: 34927545).
