Histone deacetylation gives a tag for epigenetic repression and plays an important role in transcriptional regulation, cell cycle progression, and developmental events. HDAC9 represses MEF2-dependent transcription. HDAC9 is broadly expressed, with highest levels in brain, heart, muscle, and testis. HDAC9 has 11 isoforms produced by alternative splicing. The observed molecular weight of HDAC9 is 57 kDa, which represents alternate isoforms of HDAC9.
