It is involved in the regulation of pancreatic islet cell regeneration and functional maintenance, and Reg2 expression is critical for maintaining glucose homeostasis in response to high-fat diet-induced obesity and aging. In addition, Reg2 protein exhibits protective effects on pancreatic islet β-cells in diabetes models and is able to attenuate streptozotocin (STZ)-induced injury. In autoimmune responses, Reg2 may also be involved in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes as a target. Therefore, Reg2 protein has important potential applications in diabetes research and therapy.
