Due to high concentrations of salt in the medium, most unwanted bacteria are inhibited with the exception of some halophilic marine organisms. Presumptive coagulase-positive staphylococci produce colonies surrounded by bright yellow zones while non-pathogenic staphylococci produce colonies with reddish purple zones.
