Wnt10a also known as Wingless-type MMTV integration site family member 10A is a protein that plays an important role in cellular signaling. This protein has a molecular mass of approximately 46 kDa. Wnt10a is expressed in various tissues including skin teeth and hair follicles where it is involved in mediating several cellular processes. The protein participates in signaling events by binding to specific receptors on the cell surface initiating a cascade of intracellular activities that influence development and cell differentiation.
Biological function summary
The Wnt10a protein is involved in the regulation of development and differentiation of ectodermal organs. It acts as a ligand in the Wnt signaling pathway which is a critical component of developmental processes. Wnt10a does not form complexes with others but binds to Frizzled receptors on the cell surface to propagate signals inside the cell. These signaling events guide proper formation and functioning of skin hair teeth and certain other structures influencing tissue maintenance and growth.
Pathways
Wnt10a plays a major role in the Wnt signaling pathways specifically the canonical Wnt/β-catenin pathway. This pathway is essential for gene transcription regulation and Wnt10a activates this through interaction with Frizzled and LRP co-receptors. Wnt10a's function is particularly related to the control of gene expression necessary for embryonic development and cell proliferation often working alongside other Wnt family proteins such as Wnt10b to regulate these pathways.
Wnt10a has associations with ectodermal dysplasia and tooth agenesis. Mutations in the Wnt10a gene can result in developmental disorders affecting skin hair and teeth due to its role in ectodermal organ formation. Additionally reduced Wnt10a function is linked with conditions such as osteoporosis where bone density is compromised. The protein’s interaction with other Wnt proteins in these disorders highlights the intricate balance of the Wnt signaling network in maintaining tissue and organ health.
