LYRM2 also known as lipoamide acyltransferase.using mitochondrial protein 2 is a small protein consisting of 111 amino acids with a mass of approximately 12 kDa. It is expressed primarily in the mitochondria of cells where it takes part in the formation and function of the mitochondrial RNA-processing enzyme complex. LYRM2 influences processes within mitochondria by ensuring proper enzymatic activity. The protein shows expression in various tissues which implicates its role in several cellular functions across different cell types.
Biological function summary
LYRM2 operates within the mitochondria where it links to enzymes associated with the synthesis and function of mitochondrial proteins. It is a member of the Lyr family of mitochondrial proteins and is part of a complex that includes mitochondrial acyltransferases. This association indicates an involvement with mitochondrial respiratory chain functions contributing to proper cellular energy metabolism. The protein stabilizes the acyltransferase components assisting in the regulation of mitochondrial enzyme activity.
Pathways
LYRM2 contributes significantly to the mitochondrial respiratory chain pathway and the regulation of mitochondrial protein synthesis. It interacts closely with other proteins like LYRM5 and components of the mitochondrial pyruvate dehydrogenase complex. LYRM2's association with these key proteins ensures efficient performance of the respiratory chain supporting ATP production. Its activity supports the overall energy balance within cells and affects cellular respiration efficiency.
LYRM2 has associations with mitochondrial disorders like Leigh syndrome and other conditions involving dysfunctional mitochondrial energy metabolism. Dysfunctional LYRM2 expression may result in impaired energy production which can exacerbate symptoms of mitochondrial diseases. The protein is connected to the disease mechanism through its interaction with critical proteins like NDUFS6 another mitochondrial complex component. Dysregulation of LYRM2 can impact cellular ATP levels contributing to the neurological and muscular symptoms observed in these disorders.
