NeuroD2 also known as Neuronal Differentiation 2 is a transcription factor involved in neurogenesis. It weighs approximately 40 kDa. This protein is part of the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) family which regulates gene expression. NeuroD2 is expressed mainly in the nervous system particularly in the developing brain and certain adult brain regions. Its expression pattern suggests an important role in neural development and maintenance.
Biological function summary
NeuroD2 influences neuronal differentiation and survival. It guides precursor cells toward a neuronal fate influencing neurogenesis and impacting brain structure. NeuroD2 does not form large protein complexes but interacts closely with other bHLH transcription factors. These interactions help regulate the transcription of genes necessary for the development and maturation of neurons.
Pathways
Transcription factors such as NeuroD2 play key roles in the neurogenesis pathway and the calcium signaling pathway. It operates in tandem with other proteins like NeuroD1 to effectively guide neural precursor cells toward differentiation into mature neurons. Through these pathways NeuroD2 helps regulate genes that are important for brain development and function.
Abnormal NeuroD2 expression relates to neurological conditions like autism spectrum disorders and certain types of epilepsy. Mutations or dysregulation in NeuroD2 can affect associated proteins like REST (RE1-Silencing Transcription factor) which plays a role in neuronal gene silencing. Understanding these connections provides insights into how NeuroD2 influences neural-related diseases and offers potential targets for therapeutic intervention.
