COX4 also known as cytochrome c oxidase subunit IV is a component of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. It has an approximate molecular weight of 17 kDa. COX4 is expressed in high levels in tissues with abundant energy requirements such as heart muscle and brain. This protein is part of the cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV) the last enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain which plays an important role in cellular respiration.
Biological function summary
The cytochrome c oxidase complex facilitates the transfer of electrons from cytochrome c to oxygen ultimately generating water. This process contributes to the proton gradient across the mitochondrial membrane necessary for ATP synthesis. COX4 serves as a regulatory subunit that can influence the efficiency of the electron transfer process. This complex is vital for maintaining the balance of energy production in cells and has a role in adaptive responses to varying energy demands.
Pathways
COX4 functions in the oxidative phosphorylation pathway which is critical for ATP production in eukaryotic cells. This pathway includes several protein complexes with COX4 being a part of the terminal complex IV. It interacts with other proteins such as cytochrome c and ATP synthase linking electron transport to ATP production. In turn this pathway supports various biological functions and maintains cellular energy homeostasis.
