SLITRK2 also known as Slit and Trk-like family member 2 is a protein with a molecular weight of approximately 104 kDa. Expressed mainly in the central nervous system especially in the brain this protein includes six leucine-rich repeat domains. It plays a significant role in neural development by promoting neurite outgrowth and regulating synapse formation. SLITRK2 is a transmembrane protein influencing cell adhesion processes integral to nerve cell differentiation and connectivity.
Biological function summary
SLITRK2 contributes to synaptic connectivity and neuron-to-neuron communication. It is part of a family of proteins with structural similarities to Trk neurotrophin receptors which are key in maintaining neural networks. However SLITRK2 acts independently of classical neurotrophic signaling pathways. The protein's design lets it interact with other synaptic proteins supporting the appropriate development of neuron circuits essential for cognitive functions.
Pathways
SLITRK2 is involved in the regulation of synaptic strength and plasticity. It is associated with the synaptic adhesion network pathway interacting closely with proteins like LAR-RPTP and PSD-95. SLITRK2 modulates these pathways to influence synaptic remodeling and neurotransmission strength which are central aspects of synaptic function and plasticity. Although its pathways differ from classical neurotrophic signaling SLITRK2's role in neural connectivity is linked in scope and impact.
Research links SLITRK2 to neurodevelopmental disorders such as schizophrenia. Abnormalities in SLITRK2 expression and function can lead to disruptions in neural circuitry potentially contributing to cognitive deficits observed in such conditions. Additionally associations with autism spectrum disorders have been observed implicating SLITRK2 in abnormal synaptic development. The protein interacts with others like neurexins and neuroligins significant in these disorders playing a role in disrupted synaptic adhesion and signaling attributed to pathological states in neurodevelopmental contexts.
