The NPFF1 receptor NPFF2 receptor and GPR54 also known as the Kisspeptin receptor belong to the G protein-coupled receptor family. These receptors mechanically function by binding to neuropeptides such as neuropeptide FF and Kisspeptin resulting in signal transduction that affects various cellular responses. GPR54 the Kisspeptin receptor has a molecular mass of about 42 to 44 kDa. The NPFF1 and NPFF2 receptors are broadly expressed in the central nervous system while GPR54 is mainly found in the hypothalamus pituitary and reproductive organs.
Biological function summary
These receptors play significant roles in maintaining homeostasis and reproductive functions by mediating major neurophysiological processes. GPR54 coupled with Kisspeptin is part of an important neuroendocrine complex that stimulates the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) which ultimately regulates fertility. The NPFF receptors modulate pain processing and may influence opioid peptide effects in the brain.
