Parotid secretory protein often called PSP or BPIFA2 acts mechanically by serving as a salivary protein with antimicrobial properties. PSP weights approximately 25 kDa. This protein is expressed abundantly in the parotid gland while also present in other exocrine glands like submandibular and sublingual glands. PSP may interact with other proteins to perform its function effectively as it binds to pathogens and hinders their growth.
Biological function summary
The protein influences immune defense in salivary secretions. PSP is part of salivary innate immune responses and works alongside other salivary proteins for maintaining oral health. This protein contributes to the barrier function against bacteria and viruses inside the mouth. PSP is capable of agglutination of microbes making their removal by saliva more efficient.
Pathways
PSP is extensively involved in the immune defense pathways of the oral cavity and initial gastrointestinal tract. In these pathways PSP functions within networks including proteins such as mucins and histatins which collectively contribute to oral homeostasis and microbial balance. PSP’s ability to bind bacteria supports its role in these pathways by enhancing the prevention of infection and inflammation.
PSP's dysfunction is associated with Sjögren's syndrome and dental caries. This protein shows decreased expression in Sjögren's syndrome an autoimmune disorder affecting exocrine glands. Moreover decreased PSP levels are linked with a higher risk of dental caries due to reduced microbial defense in the oral cavity. PSP’s interaction with other proteins like mucins highlights its importance in maintaining a healthy oral environment and protecting against such conditions.
