PCTP-L also known as Phosphatidylcholine Transfer Protein-Like is a lipid-binding protein. This protein is involved in the transfer of phosphatidylcholine between membranes. It has an approximate molecular mass of 26 kDa. PCTP-L is expressed in liver brain and other tissues. The protein shows higher expression in organs where there is active lipid transport and metabolism.
Biological function summary
PCTP-L plays a significant role in intracellular lipid transport and metabolism regulation. It is not known to be a part of a larger protein complex. The protein facilitates the movement of phosphatidylcholine molecules between cellular membranes influencing lipid bilayer composition and cellular membrane dynamics. It also contributes to maintaining lipid homeostasis within cells which is important for regular cell function and energy storage.
Pathways
PCTP-L participates in lipid metabolism and transport pathways. It works closely with proteins involved in the metabolism of lipid molecules such as phospholipase A2. In the lipid metabolic pathway PCTP-L interacts with enzymes and transporters that manage lipid biosynthesis and degradation contributing to the maintenance of cellular lipid levels and membrane structure.
PCTP-L is implicated in disorders related to lipid metabolism such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and atherosclerosis. Abnormalities in PCTP-L expression or function may lead to disrupted lipid balance affecting liver function and contributing to disease progression. PCTP-L also shows associations with conditions that involve abnormal lipid accumulation where it may interact with proteins like Apolipoprotein E known for their roles in lipid transport and cardiovascular disease.
