RPL8 also known as Ribosomal Protein L8 is a component of the 60S subunit of the ribosome playing a critical role in protein synthesis. It has a mass of approximately 26.1 kDa. RPL8 is expressed in a wide range of tissues including the liver kidney and brain reflecting its essential role in cellular function. This protein contributes directly to the structure and function of the ribosome facilitating the translation of mRNA into polypeptides.
Biological function summary
RPL8 serves as an integral part of the ribosomal machinery ensuring effective protein synthesis within cells. It is part of the large ribosomal subunit complex working alongside other ribosomal proteins to form a functional ribosome. This role is paramount for maintaining cellular homeostasis and supporting growth and proliferation by enabling balanced protein production.
Pathways
RPL8 is key within several fundamental biological pathways including the translation pathway and ribosome biogenesis. In ribosome biogenesis it interacts with proteins such as RPL5 and RPL11 contributing to the assembly and maturation of ribosomal subunits. This interaction facilitates the complex process of protein synthesis ensuring the correct translation of genetic information into functional proteins.
Abnormalities in RPL8 expression or function have been linked to certain cancers and Diamond-Blackfan anemia. In cancer dysfunction in ribosomal protein balance including RPL8 can lead to unchecked cellular proliferation. In Diamond-Blackfan anemia defects associated with RPL8 and other ribosomal proteins like RPS19 cause ineffective erythropoiesis leading to the anemia typically observed in this condition. Understanding these connections helps guide potential therapeutic interventions.
