The LYRM5 protein also known as LYR motif containing 5 is a small protein with a mass of approximately 7 kDa. Researchers have identified its expression predominantly in mitochondrial regions where it plays a critical role in mitochondrial function. This protein forms part of the LYR family which is involved in various cellular activities. LYRM5's location in mitochondria suggests its direct involvement in mitochondrial processes and homeostasis.
Biological function summary
LYRM5 functions as an important component in mitochondrial bioenergetics. It associates with the complex known as NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (Complex I) of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Through this association LYRM5 supports the assembly and stabilization of Complex I a critical step in ATP production. This function highlights its importance in cellular energy metabolism emphasizing LYRM5’s role in maintaining proper mitochondrial function.
Pathways
LYRM5 is actively engaged in the oxidative phosphorylation pathway which is important for ATP generation in cells. It facilitates interactions within Complex I ensuring the efficient transfer of electrons in the electron transport chain. Additionally LYRM5 interacts with proteins such as NDUFS6 (part of Complex I) further illustrating its role in this vital energy-producing pathway.
Alterations or malfunctions of LYRM5 have been implicated in mitochondrial diseases often characterized by defects in energy production. Specifically studies link mutations in LYRM5 to disorders like Leigh syndrome a severe neurological condition. The protein's interaction with Complex I proteins like NDUFS6 also associates it with these mitochondrial pathologies suggesting a critical disease-related role for LYRM5 in maintaining mitochondrial integrity.
