LIN7 also known as LIN7A LIN7B and LIN7C is a protein with a molecular mass of about 24-28 kDa. LIN7 proteins are present in the brain kidney and epithelial cells where they work to regulate cellular processes. The three versions of LIN7 A B and C are highly similar in structure and function within these tissues helping maintain cell polarity and joining protein networks together at synapses and cell junctions.
Biological function summary
LIN7 proteins form part of a multi-protein complex that stabilizes surface molecules in polarized cells. In neurons LIN7 interacts with other proteins to ensure proper synaptic transmission. It interacts with the PDZ domain-containing proteins that organize proteins at specific cell locations. This organization is fundamental for neurotransmitter receptor localization especially sticking closely to membrane proteins like NMDA receptors and potassium channels which are very important for neuronal signaling.
Pathways
LIN7 proteins play an important role in both the asymmetric cell division pathway and the cell signaling pathway. In the asymmetric cell division pathway LIN7 connects with other proteins such as CRB3 and CASK assisting in the proper orientation and division of cells. The cell signaling pathway involves LIN7's association with other proteins like DLG and MPP7 helping transmit signals that control cellular growth and behavior emphasizing the role LIN7 performs in different cellular environments.
LIN7 proteins show a connection with neurological disorders and certain types of cancer. For instance mutations or dysregulation of LIN7 can be linked to cognitive disorders due to their role in synaptic function and neural communication as witnessed in autism spectrum disorders. Additionally altered expression of LIN7 might associate with some epithelial cancers where disrupted cell polarity is a feature. LIN7 connects to the E-cadherin protein in cancer progression highlighting its importance in maintaining tissue organization and cell-to-cell adhesion.
