LIN7A also known as Lin-7 homolog A or MALS-1 is a protein with a molecular weight of approximately 25 kDa. It plays a significant mechanical role in cell signaling and synaptic assembly. LIN7A primarily localizes at cell membranes with pronounced expression in the brain and heart where it participates in the development and maintenance of cellular polarity and tight junctions.
Biological function summary
LIN7A is involved in neuronal signaling and synaptic function. It forms part of the larger complex known as the membrane-associated guanylate kinase (MAGUK) protein family. In neurons LIN7A maintains receptor localization by interacting with synaptic proteins and is essential in stabilizing various complexes necessary for synaptic communication.
Pathways
LIN7A participates significantly in the MAPK and PI3K/Akt signaling pathways. These pathways are important in regulating cell growth and survival. LIN7A interacts with other proteins like DLG1 and CASK which are essential components in maintaining cellular signaling integrity within these pathways.
Disruptions in LIN7A expression or function have connections with neurological disorders such as schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders. LIN7A’s interaction with other proteins such as DLG4 suggests its involvement in synaptic dysfunctions which are common characteristics in these conditions. Understanding LIN7A's roles in these disorders can potentially lead to targeted therapeutic approaches.
