ANT4 also called aquaporin N-terminal 4 represents a unique protein involved in cellular processes. This protein has a known molecular mass and expresses itself mainly in testicular tissue. ANT4 belongs to the ADP/ATP carrier family also known as solute carrier family 25 member 31 (SLC25A31). The protein channels are located within the mitochondrial membrane where they function to transport ATP and ADP.
Biological function summary
ANT4 facilitates mitochondrial energy exchange by transporting ATP out of mitochondria while importing ADP. This protein works with critical metabolic processes ensuring energy distribution to cells. ANT4 exists as part of a mitochondrial transporter complex playing a significant role in cellular energy homeostasis. Its activity influences processes like ATP production and programmed cell death (apoptosis).
Pathways
ANT4 integrates with essential energy metabolism and apoptosis pathways. Within the oxidative phosphorylation pathway ANT4 collaborates with other mitochondrial carrier proteins such as ANT1 ANT2 and ANT3 to manage ATP supply necessary for cellular energy demand. Additionally ANT4 associates with components in the apoptosis pathway impacting cell survival and programmed cell death mechanisms significantly.
Alterations or malfunctions of ANT4 relate to certain male infertility conditions and mitochondrial myopathy. Changes in ANT4 function may affect energy balance and sperm viability due to its expression in testicular tissue. The protein's disruption also associates with ANT family members in connection to mitochondrial disorders illustrating its impact on cellular metabolism and energy maintenance across multiple cellular types.
