RXFP2 also known as Relaxin/insulin-like family peptide receptor 2 acts as a G protein-coupled receptor. This protein has a molecular mass of approximately 86 kDa and researchers have found it most abundantly expressed in the reproductive organs such as the testes and in some brain regions. RXFP2 binds to its ligand INSL3 which activates a cascade of signaling events inside the cell. When this receptor is engaged it mobilizes intracellular calcium and activates cyclic AMP pathways playing an important role in communication within the cell.
Biological function summary
The RXFP2 receptor is important for reproductive health and development. It facilitates the descent of testes in male development a process essential for normal fertility. RXFP2 operates not as a part of a large complex but rather it interacts closely with signaling molecules like INSL3. The activation of the RXFP2 receptor impacts the maturation of male reproductive organs and influences the production of sex hormones. Its function supports normal male reproductive anatomy through hormonal pathways.
Pathways
The RXFP2 receptor is essential in the reproductive and endocrine systems. It is actively involved in the Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) signaling pathway influencing cellular growth and development. RXFP2 also integrates into the hormonal signaling pathway connected to testosterone a process led by interactions with proteins like the Androgen receptor. The integration of RXFP2 into these pathways highlights its role in regulating reproductive functions and hormonal balances.
Abnormalities in RXFP2 can lead to cryptorchidism a condition where one or both testes fail to descend. Both genetic mutations in RXFP2 and deregulation of its pathway with INSL3 have been linked to this disorder. Additionally studies have associated RXFP2 with testicular dysgenesis syndrome impacting fertility and reproductive health. Its improper functioning shows significant connection with the INSL3 yet also affects downstream partners like testosterone synthesis enzymes further influencing reproductive pathologies.
