The Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptor 1 (CHRM1) is a G protein-coupled receptor that plays an important role in transmitting acetylcholine-mediated cholinergic signals. It also goes by the names 'M1 receptor' or 'muscarinic acetylcholine receptors'. The protein has a mass of approximately 51 kDa and is largely expressed in the central nervous system particularly in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Its activation leads to intracellular signaling cascades involving the modulation of ion channels and influencing cellular responses.
Biological function summary
CHRM1 participates in various neural functions by interacting with acetylcholine. It does not form part of a complex itself but has significant interactions with other proteins particularly in nerve cells influencing cognitive processes and memory. CHRM1 plays an essential role in modulating neurotransmission which affects neuronal excitability and synaptic plasticity contributing to learning and attention processes.
Pathways
CHRM1 is involved in the phosphoinositide pathway and modulation of the MAPK/ERK pathway. The receptor interacts with proteins like Gq and G11 family members during signal transduction. These pathways help mediate the cellular actions initiated by neurotransmitter binding therefore facilitating long-term potentiation and contributing to cognitive function and higher brain activities.
CHRM1 is associated with Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. Altered signaling or expression of this receptor often correlates with cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease suggesting a significant role in neurodegenerative processes. In schizophrenia dysfunctional CHRM1 signaling may impact thought processes and behavioral symptoms. In these contexts CHRM1 is connected to proteins such as beta-amyloid in Alzheimer's and dopamine receptors in schizophrenia pointing to its relevance in these conditions' molecular pathology.
