LDL (Copper oxidized) also known as oxidized copper is a type of low-density lipoprotein modified through oxidation processes involving copper ions. LDL with an approximate mass of 2.2 to 3.0 MDa is primarily expressed in the bloodstream and synthesized in the liver. While standard LDL plays a role in lipid transport the oxidized form exhibits altered mechanical properties including greater uptake by macrophages leading to foam cell formation.
Biological function summary
The oxidized form of LDL has a significant role in atherosclerosis progression. Oxidized LDL is not part of a distinct complex but interacts with cells through scavenger receptors like SR-A and CD36 on macrophages prompting inflammatory responses. The oxidative modification occurs when copper ions catalyze the formation of lipid peroxides enhancing the inflammatory potential of LDL.
Pathways
Oxidized LDL acts within the inflammation and lipid metabolism pathways. It contributes to the Toll-like receptor signaling pathway which mediates inflammatory responses and the cholesterol metabolism pathway. Proteins closely related to these pathways include apolipoprotein B-100 which is integral to LDL structure and CEPT an enzyme involved in lipid exchange and transport reactions.
Oxidized LDL has strong associations with atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Its presence in the vascular endothelium induces injury and plaque formation pathways that involve key proteins like matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Oxidized LDL also links to hyperlipidemia where it exacerbates the risk by promoting endothelial dysfunction and inflammatory signaling creating a feedback loop that further elevates cardiovascular risk.
