MRPS14 also known as mitochondrial ribosomal protein S14 is a component of the mitochondrial ribosome small subunit (28S). This protein plays an essential mechanical role in mitochondrial protein synthesis. It has a mass of approximately 16 kDa. MRPS14 is expressed in mitochondria and you find it in cells across a wide range of human tissues. It participates in translation processes specific to the mitochondrial environment showing its critical involvement in cellular energy production.
Biological function summary
Mitochondrial ribosomal protein S14 is vital for the synthesis of proteins that are encoded by mitochondrial DNA. It forms part of the mitochondrial ribosome complex collaborating with other mitochondrial ribosomal proteins to translate mitochondrial mRNA into functional polypeptides. This protein manufacturing process is necessary for the assembly of oxidative phosphorylation complexes which are key components of energy production in cells. The efficient function of MRPS14 is important for maintaining cellular metabolic activity.
Pathways
MRPS14 plays a role in the mitochondrial translation pathway which includes the steps necessary for converting genetic instructions into functional proteins within the mitochondria. It also intersects with the oxidative phosphorylation pathway where it supports energy production by enabling the synthesis of essential respiratory chain proteins. MRPS14 works closely with other mitochondrial ribosomal proteins like MRPS11 and MRPS16 contributing to the assembly and function of the mitochondrial ribosome.
MRPS14 has been linked to mitochondrial dysfunction which is implicated in disorders such as mitochondrial myopathy and MELAS syndrome (Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy Lactic Acidosis and Stroke-like episodes). These conditions typically arise due to disruptions in energy production processes within mitochondria. Interaction with proteins such as MRPL44 and MRPS22 which also play roles in mitochondrial protein synthesis can affect the overall pathological outcomes in mitochondrial diseases.
