CYP2J2 also known as cytochrome P450 2J2 is an enzyme belonging to the cytochrome P450 superfamily. It catalyzes the metabolism of arachidonic acid to epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) which are signalling molecules. CYP2J2 has a mass of approximately 57 kDa and is prominently expressed in the heart although expression also occurs in the liver intestine and other organs. The enzyme's activity involves the oxidation of various substrates including certain drugs contributing to their metabolism and elimination.
Biological function summary
CYP2J2 contributes to cardiovascular function regulation by producing EETs. EETs have anti-inflammatory and vasodilatory effects which maintain vascular health. This enzyme does not usually form part of larger complexes but can influence other biological processes independently. The regulation of blood pressure and prevention of inflammation highlight the vascular role of CYP2J2 through EETs.
