MSY2 also known as YBOX2 or YBX2 is a protein involved in gene regulation specifically affecting mRNA stability and translation. The protein has a molecular mass of approximately 36 kDa. MSY2 is a germ cell-specific protein primarily expressed in testes and ovaries. It plays an important role during gametogenesis and early embryogenesis by binding with mRNA and forming messenger ribonucleoprotein (mRNP) complexes and therefore controlling mRNA metabolism.
Biological function summary
MSY2 functions as a regulator of mRNA translation and storage. It is part of a ribonucleoprotein complex that safeguards mRNAs during gametogenesis. This protein displays specificity in binding to Y-box motifs on mRNA which allows it to regulate gene expression and protein synthesis at a posttranscriptional level. Its function ensures correct development of germ cells contributing to reproductive success.
Pathways
MSY2 integrates into posttranscriptional regulatory mechanisms and is important for mRNA stability within these pathways. One such pathway involves cytoplasmic deadenylation and translational control during oocyte maturation. MSY2’s role also extends to working closely with other proteins such as YBX1 which shares similar functions in mRNA regulation further highlighting the interconnected nature of its activity.
MSY2’s deregulation can lead to fertility issues particularly affecting spermatogenesis. Aberrant expression of MSY2 affects mRNA stability and may result in testicular dysfunction. It also connects with proteins like DAZL which is another germ cell-specific regulator suggesting that perturbations in this network can affect germ cell viability and lead to reproductive disorders. Proper expression and regulation of MSY2 are therefore essential for maintaining reproductive health.
