RAB38 also known as Ras-related protein Rab-38 is a small GTPase involved in vesicular trafficking. It belongs to the RAB family containing proteins important for regulating intracellular vesicle transport. RAB38 has a molecular mass of approximately 25 kDa. This protein is predominantly expressed in lung and melanocytes suggesting its specific roles in these tissues. Its localization plays an important role in the transport and maturation of melanosomes which are organelles responsible for pigment production.
Biological function summary
RAB38 plays a significant role in melanosome biogenesis and function. It acts in concert with other proteins in a larger complex that includes melanophilin and other RAB family members such as RAB27A. This complex influences the transport of melanosomes along microtubules and their positioning within cells.
