The protein rSec6 also known as Sec6 is an integral component of the exocyst complex which plays a role in the targeting and tethering of secretory vesicles to specific sites on the plasma membrane. It has an estimated molecular mass of approximately 97 kDa. rSec6 is expressed across a range of tissue types and is especially noted in actively secreting cells such as those found in neuronal and epithelial tissues.
Biological function summary
RSec6 facilitates the assembly of the exocyst complex which comprises eight proteins and functions in the later stages of the exocytosis pathway. This complex is essential for vesicle fusion and proper secretion processes. By interacting with other exocyst components rSec6 ensures accurate delivery of vesicles containing proteins lipids and other molecules necessary for cell communication and maintenance.
Pathways
RSec6 plays a significant role in both the exocytosis and vesicle transport pathways. The exocyst complex including rSec6 is critical for the vesicle docking and fusion process. rSec6 interacts closely with other exocyst proteins such as Sec5 and Sec8 in these pathways collectively ensuring that vesicles are correctly tethered to areas of active secretion.
RSec6 shows involvement in conditions such as diabetes and some neuronal disorders. Disruption or misregulation of the exocyst complex wherein rSec6 plays a part affects insulin secretion relating to diabetes. Additionally altered rSec6 function can associate with neurodegenerative diseases due to its importance in neuronal cell signaling. The interaction between rSec6 and proteins such as Munc18 and SNAREs is vital in these contexts as these proteins cooperate closely in vesicle fusion processes implicated in several pathophysiological states.
