SNRPF also known as Small Nuclear Ribonucleoprotein Polypeptide F plays a mechanical role in the spliceosomal complex. It is a component of the U1 U2 U4 U5 and U6 small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) essential in mRNA splicing. This protein has a mass of approximately 9.5 kDa. It is mainly expressed in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells where it participates in RNA processing.
Biological function summary
SNRPF functions as a part of the spliceosome assembly a large ribonucleoprotein complex responsible for pre-mRNA splicing. This process modifies nascent RNA transcripts converting them into mature mRNA for translation. The role of SNRPF in association with other Sm core proteins enables the assembly and stabilization of the snRNPs facilitating the accurate execution of the splicing cycle.
Pathways
The involvement of SNRPF in mRNA processing stands out significantly. It acts within the spliceosome complex playing an important part in the mRNA splicing pathway. This pathway ensures the removal of introns and the proper joining of exons vital for producing functional RNA transcripts. SNRPF interacts with other proteins like SNRPD1 and SNRPD2 forming an intricate network pivotal in the regulation of gene expression.
Defects in SNRPF expression or function have links to neurodegenerative disorders and certain cancers. Misregulation of splicing events potentially caused by altered levels of SNRPF connects to conditions such as spinal muscular atrophy. The protein's interactions with other splicing factors might influence the development of these diseases highlighting the importance of its proper regulation in cellular processes.
