The l-Myc protein also known as L-Myc1 or LMyc is a member of the Myc family of transcription factors. It has a molecular weight around 39 kDa. Researchers find this protein expressed in various tissues but most often in neural and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) cells. As part of its mechanical function l-Myc binds to DNA at specific sequences regulating transcription of target genes involved in cell proliferation and differentiation.
Biological function summary
L-Myc plays a role in modulating cellular processes by forming dimer complexes with other proteins such as Max. In these complexes l-Myc influences the expression of genes linked to cell cycle control metabolism and growth signals. This regulation is essential in maintaining cellular balance and function under normal physiological conditions.
Pathways
L-Myc actively participates in the Myc-Max-Mad network which integrates signals for growth and proliferation. This network associates with important pathways like the MAPK/ERK pathway and the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. In these pathways l-Myc influences cellular responses alongside other Myc proteins like c-Myc and N-Myc which frequently collaborate or have overlapping functions.
L-Myc connects strongly with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and neuroblastoma. In these cases amplification or overexpression of l-Myc is common often resulting in aggressive tumor growth. The interplay between l-Myc and other Myc family members such as c-Myc highlights their collective role in oncogenic processes driving unchecked cellular proliferation.
