Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Alpha (PTP alpha) also known as PTPRA serves as an enzyme that removes phosphate groups from specific tyrosine residues on proteins. It has an approximate molecular weight of 130 kDa. PTP alpha is located in the cell membrane and shows expression in various tissues including the brain liver and skeletal muscle. It functions as a signaling molecule that modifies the activity of several proteins playing a significant role in cell growth differentiation and mitosis.
Biological function summary
PTPRA influences cellular processes by serving as a regulator of the Src family of tyrosine kinases which are important for intracellular signal transduction. PTP alpha does not form part of a complex but rather exists as a monomer although it can interact with other proteins.
