Ribosomal RNA also known as rRNA plays a central role in the function of ribosomes which are cellular machines essential for protein synthesis. Ribosomal RNA together with ribosomal proteins comprises the ribosome structure itself. The ribosome consists of two subunits: the small subunit (around 40S in eukaryotes) and the large subunit (around 60S in eukaryotes). Ribosomal RNA masses range from around 1500 nucleotides in small subunits to about 5000 nucleotides in large subunits depending on the species. Ribosomal RNA is expressed in high quantities in the nucleolus of eukaryotic cells where ribosome assembly occurs.
Biological function summary
Ribosomal RNA is the scaffold and catalytic component of the ribosome complex facilitating the correct alignment of messenger RNA (mRNA) and transfer RNA (tRNA) during translation. Ribosomal RNA helps catalyze peptide bond formation and ensures the accurate translation of mRNA into polypeptide chains. This complex in combination with ribosomal proteins forms a highly coordinated system responsible for protein synthesis a fundamental biological process for maintaining cellular functions and homeostasis.
Pathways
Ribosomal RNA links to significant cellular processes like the mRNA translation pathway and the ribosome biogenesis pathway. Ribosomal RNA works alongside various ribosomal proteins and transcription factors to support these pathways which are critical for regulating protein production in response to cellular needs. Many regulatory proteins such as the ribosome biogenesis factor and enzymes like RNA polymerase I play roles in regulating ribosomal RNA transcription and processing showing the intricate network of interactions essential for cellular growth and replication.
Alterations in ribosomal RNA-related processes connect to conditions such as cancer and Diamond-Blackfan anemia. Mutations affecting ribosomal RNA synthesis or function can disrupt normal protein synthesis leading to uncontrolled cell growth as seen in cancer. Similarly ribosomal RNA defects in synthesis or structural genes can cause ribosomopathies like Diamond-Blackfan anemia where defective ribosome production affects red blood cell formation. Regulatory proteins such as MYC which influences ribosomal RNA synthesis further highlight the importance of maintaining ribosomal RNA function in preventing these diseases.
