The biological target Inositol-trisphosphate 3-kinase B (ITPKB) plays an important role mechanically in cellular signaling by phosphorylating inositol 145-trisphosphate (IP3) to produce inositol 1345-tetrakisphosphate (IP4). Also known as ITPK-B or IP3 3-kinase B it is a 66-kDa protein expressed mainly in the brain hematopoietic cells and the immune system. This enzyme's activity regulates intracellular calcium levels thereby influencing various cellular processes.
Biological function summary
ITPKB modulates immune system processes and neural function. It does not form part of a larger protein complex but interacts with other molecules to influence cellular activities. Regulation of calcium signaling through the activity of ITPKB affects T-cell development and function as well as neurogenesis in the brain. By altering IP3 and IP4 levels ITPKB has an impact on the pathways that modulate cell proliferation and differentiation.
