The LMTK2 protein also known as Lemur Tyrosine Kinase 2 is a serine/threonine kinase with an approximated mass of 150 kDa. It plays an important role in protein phosphorylation influencing various cellular processes. LMTK2 is expressed in multiple tissues notably in the brain and testis. Its kinase activity impacts neurodevelopment and spermatogenesis reflecting its significant presence in these areas.
Biological function summary
LMTK2 influences neuron maintenance and signaling. It is not known to be part of any large protein complex but interacts closely with important cellular proteins. LMTK2 has a regulatory effect on axonal outgrowth and synaptic vesicle transport which are essential for neuron function. Moreover it interacts with other kinases and phosphatases impacting cellular signal transduction pathways.
Pathways
LMTK2 has important roles in the Wnt and MAPK signaling pathways. Within the Wnt pathway LMTK2 modulates cellular growth and differentiation by interacting with proteins like beta-catenin. In the MAPK pathway its influence on kinases helps control cell proliferation and stress responses. The interactions of LMTK2 with these signaling pathways highlight its influence on cell fate decisions and adaptive responses.
LMTK2 associates with neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. Its dysfunction has been linked to Alzheimer's disease where aberrant signaling affects neuronal health. LMTK2 potentially interacts with tau protein impacting tau pathology. In cancer altered LMTK2 expression associates with disrupted cellular growth signaling suggesting a role in tumor progression. Understanding these connections offers insights for therapeutic innovations.
