EF-Ts also known as Elongation Factor Ts is a protein with a molecular mass of approximately 30 kDa. It plays a significant role in protein synthesis specifically during the elongation phase of translation. EF-Ts is a guanine nucleotide exchange factor and primarily expressed in prokaryotic cells aiding EF-Tu in the exchange of GDP for GTP. By this function EF-Ts maintains a continuous supply of active EF-Tu essential for protein translation efficiency.
Biological function summary
EF-Ts facilitates the regeneration of its partner EF-Tu supporting its function in the ribosome. This protein forms part of the elongation factor complex an essential component of the translation machinery in bacterial cells. EF-Ts ensures EF-Tu remains in its active form enabling the delivery of aminoacyl-tRNA to the ribosomal A-site. Without EF-Ts EF-Tu would remain GDP-bound hampering protein synthesis.
Pathways
EF-Ts contributes to the translational control pathway by interacting directly with EF-Tu and ribosomes. It's important for maintaining the fidelity and speed of protein synthesis. EF-Ts operates alongside these components in the protein synthesis pathway which is central to cellular function and growth. EF-Ts does not work in isolation but coordinates closely with these other translational factors to maintain efficient protein production.
Dysfunctions in protein synthesis involving EF-Ts have implications for bacterial infections and antibiotic resistance. EF-Ts can be a target for antibiotics that aim to disrupt bacterial translation. Additionally studies have shown that mutations or alterations in related proteins like EF-Tu may lead to antibiotic resistance making EF-Ts a significant protein in understanding and combating bacterial diseases. Understanding EF-Ts' precise role offers insights into novel therapeutic approaches against these infections.
