The Muted protein also known as MUTED plays a role in the trafficking and sorting of proteins in vesicles. This small protein with an approximate molecular mass of 22 kDa mainly expresses in melanocytes but researchers have also observed it in other cell types. It functions closely with other proteins involved in the regulation of melanosome biology. The expression pattern of Muted suggests it has specific roles in pigmentation and possibly related cellular processes.
Biological function summary
Muted influences important cellular functions by forming part of the biogenesis of lysosome-related organelles complex-1 (BLOC-1). This complex which includes eight subunits is vital for the generation of lysosome-related organelles such as melanosomes and platelet-dense granules.
