BTNL3 also known as butyrophilin-like 3 is a protein that plays a role in immune system regulation. It has a molecular weight of approximately 55 kDa and is primarily expressed in the epithelial tissues including the skin and gut. BTNL3 belongs to the butyrophilin family which is part of the immunoglobulin superfamily. This protein is recognized for its function in modulating immune responses by interacting with T cells through its extracellular domains.
Biological function summary
BTNL3 influences immune cell activity by acting as a modulator affecting the activation and suppression of T cells. BTNL3 can form a complex with other butyrophilin-like proteins such as BTNL8 to exert its regulatory effects. Its expression in epithelial tissues suggests a role in maintaining epithelial barrier integrity and immune homeostasis at these sites.
Pathways
BTNL3 takes part in the regulation of T cell receptor signaling. It contributes to the broader immunological pathways including the adaptive immune response. Other proteins like BTN3A1 interact within these pathways to modulate immune cell function and ensure balanced immune responses highlighting the coordinated actions required for proper immune surveillance.
BTNL3 has connections to inflammatory bowel disease and skin disorders. Altered expression or function of BTNL3 may disrupt the immune equilibrium contributing to these conditions. Furthermore it intersects with proteins such as BTNL8 which may also be implicated in these pathological states indicating the importance of BTNL3 in maintaining immune health and its potential as a therapeutic target.
