The GSTM1 GSTM2 GSTM4 and GSTM5 proteins belong to the glutathione S-transferase family also known as GST mu class. These proteins play a role in detoxification by catalyzing the conjugation of reduced glutathione to a wide number of exogenous and endogenous hydrophobic electrophiles. Each GSTM isoform weighs roughly 25-28 kDa. They are expressed in various tissues most abundantly in the liver kidney and lungs.
Biological function summary
The glutathione S-transferase mu proteins protect cells from oxidative stress. They participate in the detoxification of reactive oxygen species and xenobiotics.
