STARD5 also known as StAR-related lipid transfer domain protein 5 is an important player in intracellular cholesterol transport. It functions as a START domain containing protein facilitating the transfer of cholesterol and other lipids between intracellular membranes. With a molecular mass of approximately 23 kDa STARD5 displays a specific pattern of expression in tissues. It is highly expressed in the liver kidney and spleen where it plays a role in cellular lipid regulation.
Biological function summary
The transfer of cholesterol and lipids by STARD5 helps maintain cellular lipid homeostasis. It is not known to form part of a complex but operates independently to ensure that cholesterol levels are balanced within cells. This activity supports cell membrane integrity and the synthesis of steroid hormones and bile acids. By regulating these processes STARD5 plays a significant function in maintaining cell health and metabolism.
Pathways
The activity of STARD5 is critical in the cholesterol transport and metabolism pathway. It works closely with proteins such as NPC1 and NPC2 which also facilitate cholesterol trafficking. This involvement aligns STARD5 with the lysosomal storage pathway highlighting its role in managing cholesterol storage and mobilization within cells.
Altered function or expression of STARD5 links to conditions like Niemann-Pick disease type C and obesity-related dyslipidemia. Niemann-Pick disease type C is closely tied to disrupted cholesterol transport where STARD5's role intersects with NPC1 and NPC2 proteins both known for their involvement in this lysosomal disorder. In obesity-related dyslipidemia the protein's regulation of cholesterol levels can impact lipid profiles influencing disease development and progression.
