PDGF AB also known as Platelet-Derived Growth Factor AB is a heterodimeric protein with an approximate mass around 30 kDa. The PDGF AB protein plays an important role in cell proliferation and differentiation by activating its receptor PDGFR. It gets expressed in a variety of cell types including fibroblasts smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells. This growth factor influences cellular behaviors through its interactions with cells in connective tissues where it shows significant levels of expression.
Biological function summary
The PDGF AB protein promotes cellular proliferation and migration particularly in the context of wound healing and development. It forms part of a larger family of PDGF molecules that include homodimers and heterodimers and it requires specific receptor binding to exert its function. As a member of the growth factor family PDGF AB contributes to the signaling pathway that regulates tissue growth and repair processes.
Pathways
PDGF AB fits significantly into the PI3K/AKT and MAPK signaling pathways. These pathways are key in regulating cellular growth and survival and they involve interactions with important proteins like Ras and AKT. The activity of PDGF AB in these pathways affects various downstream molecular processes making it an integral component of cellular signaling networks.
PDGF AB connects to a few pathologies notably atherosclerosis and certain forms of cancer. It often associates with diseases where aberrant cell proliferation and migration occur. For instance in atherosclerosis PDGF AB interacts with proteins such as Integrins and MMPs which contribute to the remodeling of blood vessels. Similarly in oncology the dysregulation of PDGF AB can lead to malignancies with its interaction through growth-promoting pathways.
