EI2BL/MRI1 also known as TRMT11 serves as a methyltransferase enzyme with a molecular mass of approximately 68 kDa. It primarily functions in the methylation of guanosine at the N2 position within tRNA molecules. Expression of this protein occurs mainly in the cytoplasm but it can also be found in the nucleus of various cellular types including human tissue.
Biological function summary
EI2BL/MRI1 plays a role in the biosynthesis and modification of tRNA which is essential for accurate protein synthesis. It is part of a complex that functions with methyltransferases to ensure proper methylation of RNA ultimately supporting translation fidelity. This activity helps maintain the stability and integrity of tRNA molecules necessary for protein production.
Pathways
EI2BL/MRI1 actively participates in the RNA modification and processing pathways specifically in tRNA methylation. It interrelates with other proteins such as tRNase Z and METTL1 that are also involved in RNA processing. These interactions are critical for maintaining the proper function of the translation machinery by ensuring properly modified tRNA molecules are available.
Disruptions in EI2BL/MRI1 have implications in disorders related to protein synthesis malfunction. For example aberrant tRNA methylation linked to this protein has associations with certain types of cancer where transcriptional and translational regulation are compromised. Moreover its interaction with METTL1 can influence oncogenic processes suggesting EI2BL/MRI1 as a potential target for therapeutic intervention in cancer treatment strategies.
