MRPS9 also known as mitochondrial ribosomal protein S9 is a protein involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Its molecular mass is approximately 43 kDa. It is expressed in the mitochondria across a variety of tissues. This protein assists in assembling the small subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome which aids in the translation of mitochondrial mRNA into functional proteins contributing to cellular energy production.
Biological function summary
MRPS9 functions as part of the mitochondrial ribosome complex specifically the 28S subunit. It plays an essential role in the process of translating mitochondrial-encoded genes which are critical for the oxidative phosphorylation pathway. MRPS9's proper function ensures the synthesis of proteins that are vital for mitochondrial function and energy production in cells.
Pathways
MRPS9 contributes significantly to the mitochondrial translation pathway which is essential for the oxidative phosphorylation system. This system is important for energy production in cells. Within the translation pathway MRPS9 interacts with other ribosomal proteins such as MRPL37 and MRPS18. These interactions facilitate the translation and synthesis of proteins important for maintaining mitochondrial function and energy homeostasis.
MRPS9 is connected to conditions involving mitochondrial dysfunctions such as mitochondrial myopathy. Such disorders often result from impaired energy production due to defective mitochondrial translation. In these conditions there are often interactions noted with proteins like MRPL44 and other components of the oxidative phosphorylation system illustrating the interconnectedness between mitochondrial ribosomal proteins and cellular energy defects.
