Kv1.2 also known as KCNA2 is a voltage-gated potassium channel subunit with a molecular mass of approximately 65 kDa. It plays a critical role in mediating potassium ion conductance across the cell membrane. Kv1.2 is expressed in the brain particularly in neurons but is also found in heart and other tissues. Its activity is essential for controlling the electrical excitability of cells by contributing to the repolarization phase of the action potential.
Biological function summary
The function of Kv1.2 involves regulating neuronal excitability and signaling. As a member of the wider Kv1 family it often assembles into tetrameric complexes with other Kv1 subunits to form functional channels. These complexes influence the duration and frequency of action potentials impacting synaptic transmission and plasticity which are important for normal nervous system function.
