PCP4 also known as Purkinje cell protein 4 functions as a calcium-binding protein predominantly involved in the regulation of calmodulin signaling. It weighs approximately 7 kDa and exhibits a high expression in the central nervous system especially in Purkinje cells of the cerebellum. PCP4 also shows expression in the hippocampus and other brain regions suggesting its role in neuronal activities and functions.
Biological function summary
PCP4 regulates calcium-dependent signaling pathways by interacting with calmodulin. It plays an important role in modulating neural signaling and plasticity impacting synaptic function and neuronal communication. PCP4 is not part of a large complex instead it works directly with calmodulin to influence calcium dynamics therefore affecting various neuronal processes.
Pathways
PCP4 participates actively in calcium-signaling pathways which impact neuronal excitability and synaptic transmission. It closely interacts through these pathways with calmodulin potentially affecting other downstream effectors like kinase enzymes. By modulating these pathways PCP4 influences neurotransmission and can alter neuronal circuit functions which is important for learning and memory processes.
PCP4 has a significant link with certain neurological conditions including schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders. Changes in the expression or mutation of PCP4 impact neuronal signaling and excitability contributing to the pathology of these conditions. PCP4's interaction with calmodulin may also influence these diseases as altered calcium-signaling dynamics are often observed in these disorders.
