Slit3 also known as Slit Homolog 3 is a secreted protein encoded by the SLIT3 gene. It belongs to the Slit family of proteins and has a mass of approximately 160 kDa. These proteins typically have a leucine-rich domain and immunoglobulin-like repeats. Slit3 is expressed in various tissues including the heart lung and kidney but shows highest expression in the fetal lung. It operates in the extracellular space where it interacts with cell surface receptors to relay information essential for cellular functions.
Biological function summary
Slit3 regulates cellular migration and axon guidance by binding to Roundabout (Robo) receptors. This interaction plays a critical role in neuronal development and vascularization processes.
